As a Black Man In America 🇺🇸, This Is My Experience With Racism And Policing.
Years ago, before I had my sons with a Filipina sista, and in high school, I used to date a White sista called Mela. One day, we got into a heated argument, a normal thing that healthy couples do. A cop pulled up out of nowhere, and the first thing that he said to her, “Are you okay, Ma’am. Is everything alright, is he harassing you?” At a young age, I was trying to figure out, “What was running through this cop’s mind that talking to Mela to calm down and act more civilized will make me a threat, especially when Mela was my girlfriend?”
Before I knew it, the cop steps in, out of the car, and hands-on his gun. Mela was not going to stand there and have him approached me. She held her ground, and what I remember was this, “Do you see him as a threat because he’s Black?!! We are just having a normal conversation, sir!!” From that day forward, I come to understand that there needs to be better policing in this country. The idea of seeing “Black men” as an immediate threat is a moral issue. In an America where you are presumed a “threat” due to the color of your skin and not the content of your character, it is an America with no soul. When I discovered that there were fears from those who took an oath to protect all citizens, it comes to shows me that the country needs to find its soul. The picture attached below…
