Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) In Hot Waters.
Representative Ilhan Omar has been battling charges of anti-Semitism for weeks. Rep. Omar apologized on Monday for posting on twitter that America’s support for Israel is kindled by money from a pro-Israel lobbying organization — a remark that brought a swift and downright rebuke from fellow Democrats, including the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.
Her apologies came after Ms. Pelosi and the intact House Democratic leadership issued a statement denouncing her for tweeting on Sunday night that America’s support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins, baby,” a reference to hundred-dollar notes.
To paraphrase, “Any criticism of Israel’s policies is preserved by the importance of unrestricted speech and democratic deliberation that the U.S. and Israel share. But Congresswoman Omar’s use of anti-Semitic metaphors and prejudiced slurs about Israel’s advocates is profoundly low,” the five House Democratic leaders said in a mutual statement. “We denounce these points and we call upon Congresswoman Omar to directly retract her remarks.”
