Stop Saying That Colonialism Wasn’t 100% Bad!

The easiest way to say that colonialism wasn’t 100% wretched is to imagine one’s grandparents or great-grandparents who didn’t have to go through it. And, if your people were colonizers, maybe you’ve also been brainwashed that your people were saving the so-called “savages,” Black, Brown, and Asian people. To understand why colonialism was so horrendous, imagine it happening in your country. Everyone you know had to change their names and ways of life and adopt to something out of the ordinary. Everything about them has been erased due to this idea of “civilizing the uncivilized.”

Imagine waking up one morning, and your village, town, state, city, or community has been invaded, overpowered, and settled by illegal aliens. All that they have in common with you is that they are humans. Imagine your sons and daughters have to adopt new languages and be ashamed of their native traditions because they are brainwashed that everything about them is inhumane and must not be practiced. Imagine your beautiful young daughters being forced into marriages that are unlike their own and must now accept and have sons and daughters of their new colonial masters.

As much as colonialism brought the world closer together, it left damage. It did not so-called civilized cultures that already had their ways of life, as others were forcibly imposed on them. In…
